October 8, 2026
On Saturday, October 17, from 5 to 10 p.m., adults 21 and older can buy a drink at a participating downtown restaurant and carry it down the sidewalk in an official Little City Sips cup. It's the City of Falls Church's Designated Outdoor Refreshment Area, the formal name for a sip-and-stroll zone, and October follows a June pilot and a second date scheduled for August.
Over at the other end of the city, Best Buns Bakery & Burgers opened at West Falls on October 1. It's the fourth location for Great American Restaurants, with an upstairs bar and rooftop seating, next to Meridian High School.
Both ends of the Little City are trying to give people a reason to go out in the evening, and this October they go about it in different ways. Downtown changed the rules so its existing restaurants could share one street-level crowd. West Falls built a park with a screen, a weekly music series and a restaurant that stays open into the evening. Their event calendars now overlap on the same Saturdays.
The idea has been around for a while. The city's Economic Development Authority already had a "Sip-n-Stroll" DORA on its October 7, 2025 agenda. The pilot finally ran on June 13, 2026, scheduled for 5 to 10 p.m., with nine places serving drinks.
The Falls Church News-Press reported that the pilot drew more than 4,300 people, with about 2,800 inside the zone at the 8 p.m. peak. That zone was a tight piece of downtown bounded by N. Washington Street, W. Broad Street, Maple Street and Park Avenue. At the EDA's July meeting, Chair Ross Litkenhous summed it up this way:
"It was the perfect amount of people and had a very positive outcome."
The same meeting turned to planning the next one and possibly a bigger boundary. ARLnow covered a second event scheduled for August 22 inside the same downtown boundary. The October listing gives the location as Broad Street and S. Washington, and the city publishes a boundary map. That map is the one to check before you head out, because published descriptions of the edges don't all match.
The rules are short, and a few of them surprise first-timers:
The city's October list names eight places selling drinks: Clare & Don's Beach Shack, Dogwood Tavern, Ireland's Four Provinces, Lucky Thai, Maneki Neko Japanese Restaurant, Northside Social, Pho 88 and Stratford Garden. At the pilot it was nine, and the News-Press named Ireland's Four Provinces, Pho 88 and the then-new Stratford Garden among the regulars.
October also has eight "Welcome" locations that let you bring a cup inside to browse: Action Music, Clay Café, CVS Pharmacy, Falls Church Antique Center, Father & Son Barber Shop, Paisano's Pizza, Wonder and Zoya's Atelier. Wonder is the newest of them. The city scheduled it to open at 100 W. Broad Street on April 2, 2026.
The music is spread around so the crowd keeps moving:
Admission is free. You can park free at the George Mason Square Garage, the Broad & Washington Garage or the Kaiser Permanente Garage, or find a spot on the street or in the City Hall lot.
West Falls didn't need a rule change. Commons Park is already its gathering space, and the developer programs it like one. Live music runs every Friday from 6 to 9 p.m.: Josh Walker plays October 9 and James Stevens plays October 16. The free fall movie nights show Practical Magic on Thursday, October 8 and Hocus Pocus on Thursday, October 22, with free popcorn while it lasts. On Saturday, October 10, from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m., the West Falls Watch Party shows college football on a giant LED screen, with a pop-up bar and food nearby. The game schedule is still listed as TBA.
Until this month, though, the west end was missing a sit-down place open both early and late. Best Buns at 265 W. Falls Station Blvd. is open daily from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. The menu covers bakery items, all-day breakfast, burgers, fried chicken and salads, plus cocktails, beer, wine and Best Buns' own lager and pale ale. The brand dates to 1995 in Shirlington, and the company gives 5% of its bread sales to Great American Community Kitchen, which provides free meals across Northern Virginia.
Parking is the other difference. Downtown points visitors to free public garages. At Best Buns, you get 90 minutes of free garage parking with validation. A burger before the Thursday movie fits inside that window. A full football Saturday probably won't.
Put the city's listings next to the West Falls schedule and the month falls into a pattern. West Falls has most of the weeknights. Downtown and Cherry Hill Park have the Saturdays. Two Saturdays have something at both ends.

October 10 is the full-day crossover. The Farmers Market runs every Saturday morning, year-round, in the City Hall parking lot at 300 Park Avenue. Farm Day at Cherry Hill Park brings farm history, animals, music and activities. The Watch Party opens at 11 a.m. and keeps going after both of those have packed up. Falls Church Arts' Halloween Window Painting Festival runs that weekend too, and it was also on this weekend, October 3 and 4.
October 17 is almost all downtown, morning and evening. Storms pushed back the Scenes in the City Plein Air Festival, and it now runs from 9 a.m. to noon on the City Hall grounds, across from the Farmers Market. Little City Sips starts at 5 p.m., a few blocks away. The Halloween Carnival on October 24 is free, with two family time slots.
Lil' Cakes & Creamery opened in September at 120 Founders Ave. in Founders Row. It sells homemade ice cream, specialty cupcakes, cake jars, cannoli and cupcake milkshakes.
Several other names have been announced but aren't open yet. West Falls still lists Dok Khao Thai Eatery at 180 W. Falls Station Blvd., The Fresh Market at 101 Haycock Road and La'Baik as coming soon, and none has a posted opening date. In April, ARLnow listed Dok Khao and iPanda Dumplings at 106 N. West St. among delayed openings. Sweet Leaf Cafe at 603 W. Broad St., planned with the chain's first drive-through, now says "winter opening" on its own location page.
Downtown has already posted its next dates. Little City Sips returns Saturday, December 12, during the Little City Holiday Market, and again Thursday, December 31, from 5 p.m. to midnight for Falls Church Watch Night. The New Year's Eve window runs seven hours, two longer than the 5 to 10 p.m. window listed for every other date so far.
Jennifer Jo keeps track of this part of Falls Church City week by week: which corner just got a new anchor, which garage validates, and which Saturday has something at both ends of Broad Street. If you'd like a local read on how the West Falls side and the downtown side are each changing, Jo & Co is glad to talk it through. Let's Connect.
